Premier League Preview: Sunderland Vs West Brom

Premier League match time dawns again at the Stadium of Light with Sunderland getting ready to host West Brom in match week 32 on Saturday, April 9, in the second of a two-legged contest.

The first, hosted by West Brom on August 21, 2010, ended 1-0 in the hosts’ favour. West Brom gambled on including the just arrived Peter Odemwingie in their starting eleven, and the 2 mn pound signing from Lokomotiv Moscow delivered.

Odemwingie scored the only goal of the match with 10 minutes of regulation time left in the game, and that was enough to secure 3 full points for his team.

Earlier, Odemwingie missed an easy scoring opportunity, barely seen minutes into the game, when he collected Brunt’s through ball but failed to beat Mignolet between Sunderland’s posts.

While Odemwingie was the stand out performer on either side, Brunt, Mulumbu, Cech, Tamas and Olsson, all had a good day at the office, for West Brom.

For Sunderland, it was a familiar tale about a poor performance on the road. Barring Bent, upfront, and Onuoha and Bramble in the back-line, it was a mediocre showing, overall, by Steve Bruce’s squad.

The only scoring opportunity for the Black Cats was a header that Onuoha failed to convert.

Head to head, Sunderland have established a 9-4 advantage over Albion, in the last 19 league games played between the sides, with the remaining 6 matches drawn.

In their last 10 league games, Sunderland have registered 2 wins, 2 draws and 6 losses; West Brom have won 3 of their last 10, while losing 3 and drawing the remaining 4. Of their 15 home games this season, Sunderland have won 6, drawn 5 and lost 4, while West Brom have won 3 of their 15 games on the road, while losing 9 and drawing the remaining 3.

In match week 31, Sunderland lost 5-0 away to Manchester City; West Brom beat Liverpool 2-1 at home.

Both teams appear headed for a mid-table finish, with 12th placed Sunderland just one rung above 13th ranked Albion. A win for either side will help keep the team farther away from the relegation mine, with Albion barely 4 points adrift of 18th placed West Ham. Steve Bruce’s squad, in particular, will be anxious to put their home advantage to good use.

Sunderland’s starting eleven against Manchester City had the following players: Mignolet, Bardsley, Turner, Mensah, Ferdinand, Cattermole, Henderson, Muntari, Sessegnon, Gyan and Wellbeck. El Mohamady, Colback and Zenden played as substitutes.

West Brom had the following men in their starting eleven against Liverpool: Carson, Reid, Meite, Olsson, Shorey, Scharner, Mulumbu, Brunt, Cox, Thomas and Odemwingie. Jara and Fortune featured as substitutes.
