Avance EPL 2011-12: West Brom vs Bolton

A Premiership Review

With Liverpool’s FA Community Shield triumph still fresh in people’s memories, one could ask, what can happen this season?

At the time of writing, the Premiership season is just under a week away and already supporters of every Premiership team are by now wiping drool from their mouths at seeing the prospect of some of the world’s best players week in week out. Premiership teams have seen some changes. Arsenal bought Rosicky from Dortmund, while Aston Villa, shipped out David O’Leary while shipping in Martin O’Neil. Blackburn has bolstered their attacking options, by signing, South African international Benni McCarthy and Wigan’s Jason Roberts. Bolton has also scoured the transfer market and has made some astute signings in Meite (Ivory Coast) from Marseille. Idan Tal from Maccabi Haifa. Sam Allardyce has made a notable coup in bringing Meite to the Reebok.

Charlton, under new manager Iain Dowie, has brought in an influx of youth and experience. The Charlton board will want Iain Dowie’s side to build on the 13th place they achieved in Alan Curbishley’s last season. Chelsea, as always, has made big summer signings in Shevchenko and Ballack. Mourinho has also brought in youth in Salomon Kalou

Everton have bolstered their squad by signing out-of-favour goalkeeper Tim Howard on a season long loan from Manchester United, and Andy Johnson from Crystal Palace. They have also strengthened their defence by signing Joleon Lescott from Wolves, but the hole left by Nigel Martyn’s retirement will have residual effects on the whole Everton team. Fulham have strengthened and will hope to build on their 12th place finish from last season. Fulham hope that summer signings Bullard and Quedrue will add flair and stability to their side.

Under technically brilliant Rafael Benitez, Liverpool has flourished in recent seasons. Bellamy will add pace and give Liverpool more attacking options up front, opposite target man Crouch. Pennant and Mark Gonzalez will add raw pace and skill to the wings while the defence is stocked full of talent, in Aurelio and Paletta. The loss of Hamann has been softened slightly, by the emergence of Sissoko, as a talented holding midfielder.

Manchester City has brought in players of experience. Hamann from Liverpool, Dabo from Lazio and (a World Cup right back) Trabelsi from Ajax. There squad will be weakened with the sale of David James if Stuart Pearce fails to replace him with a good ‘keeper.

Manchester United has shelled out a huge amount for Tottenham Hotspur’s Michael Carrick. Carrick is set to miss the start of the season however, as he picked up an ankle injury during the game with Porto at the Amsterdam Tournament. The emergence of Tomasz Kuszczak as a fine ‘keeper convinced Alex Ferguson to pay an undisclosed amount for the young Polish international. Ruud van Nistelrooy’s departure hasn’t helped Man Utd’s striking options. With only Rooney, Rossi, Saha and Solskjaer the only fit or nearly fit strikers at the club (the notable exception is Alan Smith who was converted into a midfielder) Manchester United may find it more difficult when they don’t have an established 20-goals-a-season striker.

With rookie manager Gareth Southgate in charge, Middlesbrough might be facing a relegation battle this coming season. The summer signings of Julio Arca of Sunderland and Herold Goulan from Lyon will add to the squad that has lost the experience of Hasselbaink, and of the power of Franck Quedrue. Southgate seems to have remedied the problem that had been made by Quedrue’s departure by the signing of Julio Arca for just under 2 million GBP.

Newcastle United will be hit hard, by the long-term injury sustained by Michael Owen at the World Cup and, by Alan Shearer’s retirement. Without a reliable, 20-goals-a-season out and out striker, Newcastle may find it hard to come by goals. An out-and-out striker is essential for Premiership survival. Glenn Roeder may have helped ease the situation with the signing of Damien Duff from Chelsea. Pompey’s boss Harry Redknapp has brought in experienced defender Sol Campbell, after he was released by Arsenal, Glen Johnson from Chelsea, on a season long loan, and David James from Manchester City for a reported 1.2 million.

Reading’s debut season in the Premiership, may not be helped by the fact that they are relying on last season’s team’s and bringing in player’s from League 1 and the Championship. Another of the Promoted teams, Sheffield United, has brought in players who do have Premiership experience.

Tottenham Hotspur has strengthened their squad through the signings of Zokora, (an adequate replacement for Carrick), and Berbatov. Tottenham should challenge once again for a top 4 finish. Yet as all of the top 4 teams from last season have improved on their squad’s, Tottenham still have a fairly young squad, that might not be able to cope with the pressures of European football as well as the domestic season.

Under Aidy Boothroyd, Watford won promotion to the Premiership. He has since strengthened his squad with the signing of Damien Francis, who has spent one or two seasons playing top-flight football. Watford will need to use his experience and ability wisely, if they are to survive. Although the y do have Marlon King up front, their defence must be vastly improved if they are to survive, and not concede goals.

West Ham flourished in their first season back in the Premiership, and their midfield coped well, with the artful Etherington and Benayoun on the wings, with Reo-Coker and Mullins in the centre. With Marlon Harewood and Dean Ashton upfront, West Harm will be guaranteed goals. Although their defence was very talented the lack of experience will tell as they embark on European football during next season.

Wigan Athletic was the surprise package of last season as they finished 10th and were finalists of the League Cup. Their defence helped them climb the Premiership ladder. The player exodus that has engulfed Wigan will have a profound effect on the team for the coming season, as they no longer have Jason Roberts, and the influential Jimmy Bullard, while Pascal Chimbonda’s future is still in doubt, after he handed in a written transfer request, while in his kit on the last day of last season.

One of the reasons that Wigan didn’t finish in the top 6 was that their form at home was worse than their home form. If Wigan want to qualify for Europe they will need to be more ruthless at home.

For some the title race is over even before it started. With Liverpool, strengthening a strong side Chelsea would do well to convert 1-0 wins into 4-0 or 5-0 wins. IF the title does go down to goal difference, Chelsea will need as many goals as possible.

Manchester United Draw Liverpool In FA Cup Third Round

Historic rivals Manchester United and Liverpool have been drawn together for what will undoubtedly be a blockbuster of an FA cup third round. The draw was conducted by Noel Gallagher of Oasis and Serge Pizzorno of Kasabian and the match will take place on the first weekend of January.

The teams last clashed in 2006 when Liverpool defeated United 1-0 in a match that was shadowed by the horrific broken leg injury of United’s Alan Smith. New Liverpool gaffa Roy Hodgson says «It will be an excellent game of football and it’s a bit unfortunate that two premier league teams of the quality of united and us get drawn in the third round, I always feel that’s a bit sad.»

The game will be the only tie in the draw which will face two premier league teams, something which many argue will damage the quality of the football later in the competition. The draw of the competition is designed to be fair and will not always work in any team’s favour but an interesting moment came when Kasabian’s Serge drew his favourite team Leicester and Oasis’ Noel drew his hometown Manchester City out of the hat.

This will be the 9th time the two rivals have met since the war and United have taken the victory 7 times out of the 8 previous games so bookies will have their favourites. But Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is keeping his hopes up despite a string of humiliating defeats and the loss of skippers Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher to injury.

Manchester United have been on top form recently but were victims of a shock 4-0 defeat to West-Ham which has knocked Fergie’s confidence. The match will also come at a time when new united keeper will be joining the squad so there will be question as to when current veteran keeper Van Der Sar will retire any time soon or play out the rest of the season, or if Fergie will replace him in the first thing in the new year.

Can Women Love Football?

I felt my heart thumping in my chest, my hands sweaty with excitement, and then it all erupted – fans around me were screaming and jumping in joy and I was screaming and jumping with them.

I was in the middle of the Russian part of the Manchester City Stadium, watching the UEFA Cup Final between Rangers and Zenit St Petersburg. It was like experiencing an orgasm for the very first time: for me, who had always hated football with every cell of my body, it was an astonishing revelation. Somehow, there I was, supporting my team – it helped that Zenit are from Russia like me – and at the same time wondering how that was possible.

As for most women I know, football for me had always been something that men do. Something in Their lives. The game they play, watch, discuss. The reason they scream at the TV screens, spend a ridiculous amounts of money on kits and match tickets and generally behave like loud naughty children. Something that takes our men away from us into their special world with its own rules.

As no one had ever bothered to explain those rules to me, I felt no sympathy whatsoever to this Other Woman who was unashamedly borrowing my then husband for hours, sometimes whole evenings on end and who he seemed to enjoy so much more that spending time with me.

When football was on TV, I would stay upstairs sulking, or go out for the evening. I would concoct elaborate plans to make the Sky Box stop working for the duration of the match or, failing that, just make my partner’s life miserable every time he «cheated» on me with football.

As I parted from my ex, I swore I would never again go out with a man who was obsessed with football. My wish came true, I met a very masculine man who – incredibly! – didn’t care at all about the game! Life was perfect for about a year. Then, out of the blue, The Other Woman appeared again. My boyfriend got a job at Manchester United. He, who didn’t even like football, was now selling executive boxes for one of the world’s greatest football clubs! The irony got even sharper when my partner started to play for their office team. He also now «had to» learn about football, the game being the essential part of his new job.

I still resisted. Little by little, my lovely non-football boyfriend became as obsessed as any guy on the planet. I couldn’t believe it was happening to me all over again. This time though, my man made a real effort to include me as well. He arranged a tour of the stadium. He persuaded me to work as a hostess at the club during match days through a modeling agency. He bought me a ManUtd shirt and took me to lunch at the Red Café. He even got a Manchester United collar for our kitten Boris!

I was slowly melting in my resolve to hate football for the rest of my life. As a gesture of goodwill, I made an effort to watch all United matches and even enjoyed it a little bit, which was hard to admit.

Then I was offered to work as a hostess for the Zenit match. I knew that my dad supported Zenit, and thought it would be nice to tell him about the game afterward, so I said yes. When I saw Russian fans arriving at the stadium, something stirred in me. I could feel myself getting excited. Still resisting but curious, I decided to watch the game. By pure chance, I was right in the middle of the Russian part, and, unexpectedly, started to join in their chants. I suddenly felt part of something huge, as if I was a cell in the body of a giant watching the match. By the time Zenit scored, I was hooked.

The immense enjoyment of watching my team play was something I’d never felt before. I was a changed person. The next day I found myself buying merchandise on Zenit’s website. A week later, as my boyfriend traveled to Moscow for the final between Manchester United and Chelsea, I stayed up late watching the match on my own. There I was, screaming at the screen, pale and tense during the penalties, frantically texting my mates with «YEAH!» and «We did it!»as Man United won the game and the Cup.

I’d made friends with the Other Woman and she turned out to be a great platonic friend.

The Birth Of The European Cup

In 1955 there was a championship game that consisted of winning teams from the European National Football Leagues. This league has evolved into what is now a tournament among domestic European teams called the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and has been operating as such since 1992. While the tournament may have changed names officially, for many it will forever be the European Cup.

The tournament includes three rounds of qualifying games. The teams who play in these games and the order in which they play are determined by their league performance and standards. In each round of the tournament teams are paired for competition according to those won the previous rounds. It sounds confusing I know, but there is method to the madness. This is particularly true if you live in the U.S. Most of us can relate somewhat as the NFL (National Football League) works on a similar premise as far as playoffs leading to the big game day when many people around the U.S. gathers around their televisions in order to watch commercials. This of course would be the primary difference as most people watching the European Cup are watching what is going on at ground level.

In this league there are eight groups of four teams. Each of the team plays the other teams in their group two times during the season, which typically lasts from the middle of September through the beginning of December. The top two qualifying teams from each group will move on to the next round of eliminations. This phase is an elimination phase that begins in February and ends with the big finale in May. This is when the pride of nations is on the line and the winner takes all, at least for one season.

In Europe people tend to stand behind their favorite teams and favorite players. These are countries that support their teams as they represent a certain national prize. Americans aren’t really fortunate enough to experience anything like that unless there are Olympic games going on somewhere around the world and then only for brief moments in time. European nations are able to experience that sense of national pride every day in many ways. There is nothing quite like experiencing that national pride as thousands of voices cheer in unison behind one time that represents them all.

Whether or not you are a fan of Manchester United year round it is quite possible that during certain games each year, you will cheer along with the fans of Manchester in order for them to have a victory over the team you most dread or fear playing your favorite team. For that brief moment, Manchester is your team too and most of us find that we do not easily forget that moment, as they are so incredibly easy to cheer on to victory. If your team makes it to the finals, let’s just hope they aren’t slated to play Manchester or we will be doomed to sit on opposite sides of the pitch.

Other Brands Have Sex Appeal Too

Back when I was 11, I used to think that, thanks to J.J.B. Sports, the only sports brands that existed were Adidas, Nike and Reebok. Not true. Andy Murray sports Fred Perry, the Welsh rugby team play in Under Armor and Portsmouth F.C. wear Canterbury kits. The truth is that this completely fictional, holy trinity of brands has now been superseded by a new generation of sports clothing.

For me this became apparent in 2005. I was on my way to a tennis match when on Radio 2 came a program about the rise of the word «chav». Described by Urban Dictionary as «fag in one hand, jewellery in the other», they wonder around housing estates in «imitation Adidas tracksuits». This is further complemented on television shows like Channel 4’s Shameless, and thanks to characters like Mickey Maguire the identity of the tracksuit being an an innocent staple of 1980’s football, the tracksuit has become, with the right person, responsible for crimes against others as well as fashion.

Today the blandest one-piece on the market, that was the Adidas trademark, has been replaced by apparel from brands like Canterbury, Under Armour and Kukri. Homoerotic super skin-tight base layers are the main culprit. Seemingly a size too small, many sportsman wear them to keep warm and in contact sports for «bosh-protection’. Stemmed from rugby league where it was used so opponents couldn’t grab on to shirts when making a tackle, base layers are becoming a «necessity» in all sports. No longer does your typical Premier League footballer embrace northern away trips to Newcastle on a winter night in just an away jersey.

European imports from Spain, Portugal, France, now must play in long sleeves, polar necks and base layers to keep warm. However some players just take it too far. In 2005 Ryan Giggs played in black tights to «protect his hamstrings» against Manchester City. This doesn’t help re-enforce that football is a man’s game but more of a «dress-up» by major brands on their own Barbie dolls, sorry, football players. However with this new generation of brands like Canterbury not having the arsenal, ahem, of clothing available to them some order has been restored.

Instead of the cliched university stereotype that if you have a Jack Will’s top, you have Canterbury tracky b’s, went to public school etc many others like footballers and hockey players alike are buying these clothes too. Whether rugby players like it or not.

Cole and Ballak Given the Blues

The Chelsea midfield duo join around 500 players who have already been released by their clubs this summer. After Manchester City released Benjani, Martin Petrov and Sylvinho, Cole and Ballack join the list of players looking for a new club. Last week, the Blues’ assistant manager Ray Wilkins stated that he and gaffer Carlo Ancelotti sincerely hoped that Cole would stay at the club, calling him a ‘smashing guy and a wonderful footballer.’

But the Englishman turned down a 90,000 pound a week contract and asked for one worth 150,000 pounds a week, the amount earned by John Terry and Frank Lampard, the highest-paid footballers at the club. But Chelsea were not ready to give that to him and all talks between the two parties stalled and Cole was declared free to leave the club on July the 1st on a free transfer.

He has been linked to various clubs, including the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. Spurs manager Harry Redknapp coached Cole in his West Ham days and is very keen to land the 28 year-old at White Hart Lane.

Rednapp said, ‘When Joe returns from the World Cup, I would like to talk to him about coming to Spurs.’

Cole joined Chelsea in 2003 from West Ham United for 6.6 million pounds, and in his seven seasons at the Bridge, he won three Premier League titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups and two Community Shields.

German captain Michael Ballack will also be leaving the English champions in the summer, after the club refused to hand him a one year extension on his deal.

Ballack will miss the World Cup after sustaining an injury in the FA Cup final against Portsmouth, the last match of his Chelsea career.

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho, the man who brought Ballack to London from Bayern Munich is reportedly interested in re-uniting himself with the 33 year-old by offering him a contract at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Dubai clubs Al Wasl and Al Shabab are also said to be interested in signing the German.

Ballack enjoyed a successful spell at Chelsea, winning the FA Cup and League Cup in his first ever season with the Blues. The next year, Chelsea were unable to win a single competition, even though they reached two finals and took the title race down to the last day.

He won another FA Cup in the 2008-09 campaign, before being a part of the team to win an unprecedented double of the Premier League and FA Cup last season.

Cole and Ballack join big names including Fabio Aurelio, Thierry Henry, William Gallas, David James, Juliano Belletti, Mikael Silvestre, Sol Campbell and Kris Boyd in the long list of free agents up for grabs this summer, and after the World Cup, there is sure to be huge rush in the transfer market.

The Top 3 Most Iconic Manchester United Kits

Every team has a history of kits, some good, some bad, some that make you wonder what they were thinking! Many of them stick in our minds for different reasons and can gain an everlasting place in the hearts of the supporters. Manchester United is no different, in fact with its glorious history and global recognition it is probably the most apt team in the world to consider for iconic kits.

Everybody recognises the flame red shirts, white shorts and black socks which are so definitive of the club and there have been many spectacular versions over the years so this list is not going to focus on them, instead these are three kits that inspire controversy, pride and remembrance.

The first is the 1992-94 away kit, one of the first in a long time to revert back to the ‘green and gold colours of old’ which the club sported in its youth. The kit had one deep forest green side and the other side in a bright gold/yellow, a striking kit to say the least. But what was important about this kit was it’s historical meaning, green and gold were the colours used by the club in the 19th century when it was previously known as Newton Heath. It even sported the old fashioned string collar common in those days. Given the present controversy over the club’s ownership and the significant meaning of those colours to the supporters, we could soon see these kits brought back in protest.

The next most iconic kits the club has ever worn was the 1995-96 away kit in two different and equally disgusting shades of grey. The kit was not just known for being one of the ugliest ever worn by the players but for the issues which arose from it’s design. The players argued that when wearing the kit, they were unable to see each other clearly enough to pass the ball, it was dubbed the ‘invisible kit’. During a battle against the meagre Southampton the reds fell 3-0 down by half time and manager Alex Ferguson was famously quoted at entering the changing room during half time «get that kit off, you’re getting changed». The team then switched to their blue striped kit and performance drastically improved but it was too late to save the game and the kit was subsequently scrapped. The team never won a game in that kit.

The final most iconic kit IS one of the famous red jerseys but for a significant reason. It is the 1958 home jersey which was worn by the entire team lost in the Munich air disaster. A tragedy which shook the club, the city and all of football. It was a simple, red jersey with a white collar and no sponsor, one which was pasted all over the newspapers and headlines and thus immortalised in pictures of the lost players. In 2008 the present club made the decision of remembering the 50th anniversary in a derby game against Manchester city which was due to take place just days after the tragedy. They wore replicas of the original kits, no names or sponsors in sight, and made a led the team to glory in a day which the memory will live much longer than the result.

Football Gifts For Football Fans

Buying gifts for anyone can be a nerve wracking process. It can be extremely difficult to choose a gift for our partners or closest relatives and these difficulties are amplified when looking for gifts for friends and acquaintances. The best thing to do is make a short list of peoples hobbies and interests and if these include football, then a football gift would be a sure fire success.

People rarely think to buy a friend or a loved one a football gift for a birthday or other special occasion but it makes perfect sense because football fans are by definition, fanatical about the team they support and most (if not all) would be very happy to receive a gift that was related to their team. For this choice of present to be successful the only thing you really need to be sure of is what team the intended recipient supports. It’s no good thinking «I’m pretty sure Bob supports Manchester» as I’m sure Bob will only be too happy to explain the gulf that separates Manchester United from Manchester City if you get it wrong!

A great place to start looking for that football gift would be your local sports store, they will stock replica kits and kit bags emblazoned with the most popular clubs colours. They may even stock scarves, hats and other items barring the clubs badge. However if you are in the market for something less run of the mill linked to a major club or perhaps something related to one of the less popular clubs it may be better to search and shop online.

Shopping online for football gifts is probably the most sensible option for everyone. There are now numerous specialist retails that have huge stocks of products for teams all over the world. You can also check to see if the particular football club you are interested in has its own online store as these often stock limited edition goods or perhaps items that are not available anywhere else.

The variety of football gifts available to buy is truly staggering, this is of great benefit to a person looking to buy a gift because there are items at many different price ranges and this offers you a very good chance of buying something that is both individual and memorable. At the cheapest end of the scale there are key rings and car stickers, these are often great value look really special too. Next we have scarves, hats and pennants which will help the lucky owner show support to their team on match day or any other for that matter. Books and DVD’s have become very popular in recent years and can take the form of player biographies or great historic games.

One of the most popular football gifts are the replica kits, these are great because they usually offer the chance of personalisation by having a name or phrase added to the back, this could be the person’s name or that of their favourite player. The replica kits on offer now even include vintage kits from yesterday year perhaps in celebration of an FA cup or league win sometime in the past.

Liverpool Signs Andy Carroll To Replace Fernando Torres

Liverpool Football Club have signed Andy Carroll from Newcastle United for a club record transfer fee of £35 Million. In a dramatic week, which saw the departure of fans favourite Fernando Torres, who signed for Chelsea in a British record transfer worth £50 Million.

Carroll, aged 22, graduated from the Newcastle football academy and was an integral part of the team that was promoted from the Championship last season. This season has seen him score 11 goals from 19 games and he has made his first appearance for England.

The new striker will inherit the number nine shirt vacated by Torres, becomes the most expensive British signing in the history of the game, and his transfer was confirmed just hours after the departure of Torres.

Carroll joins the Reds with an existing injury which he sustained while playing for Newcastle and it could be several weeks before he is fit to make his debut for the new team. His departure from the Tyneside club seems somewhat acrimonious, with claims and counter claims about his decision to leave.

The transfer activity at Anfield this week will have surprised many fans as Torres was idolised, and his record of 81 goals in 142 appearances for the Reds is certainly impressive, but many also believe that he had reached his peak as a player and a series of serious injuries have left him a shadow of the player he was two seasons ago.

Liverpool also completed the signing of Luis Suarez from Ajax this week and have effectively signed two new strikers for the price of one. Suarez has an impressive scoring record, while Carroll who has yet to complete a full season playing competitively in the Premier League and has only scored 34 goals in his professional career, he is believed by many to be the best young player in England.

The fans of both Liverpool and Newcastle will be disappointed to see their star strikers leave, and Chelsea fans will be delighted with the arrival of Torres, only time will tell who has secured the best deal from what transpired to be one of the most exciting and expensive days in English football history.
