Bundesliga Matchday 30 Preview

Dortmund still sits with 66 points and a fairly comfortable five point lead over Bayer Leverkusen. The title race may not have the same drama as previous seasons, but the race for the Champions League, Europa League and the relegation spots are still in full swing.

We kick off Friday’s action with Mainz – Borussia Monchengladbach, a clash between a team aspiring for Europa League against a team desperately fighting relegation.

The hosts are on a pretty bad run of form, with four consecutive games without a win and the visitors coming off a 5:1 drubbing of Koln, a game where Mike Hanke managed three assist and Marco Reus managed two goals and one assist. Gladbach has certainly picked themselves up in the second half of the season – while they only managed to pick up two wins in the first half, they’ve managed five wins so far in the second.

Mainz seem to be heading in the opposite direction. After a blinding initial performance where they tied the Bundesliga record for most consecutive wins, their form has waned slightly. The leaders after seven rounds are now in fifth place, dangerously close to conceding even the Europa League spot to Nurnberg.

For the hosts, Elkin Soto and Adam Szalai are still injured and Noveski and Svensson are suspended. The good news is that Christian Fuchs, who is an incredibly important player, is returning from a suspension.

The suspensions of the two centre-halves makes this game quite difficult to call, but considering the weakened defense line of Mainz and the error-prone defense line of Gladbach, taking Over 2.75 goals for 2.03 at Canbet can hardly be a mistake. Marco Reus to score for 4.6 at Unibet looks very tempting as well.

Didier Ya Konan shoveling in goals at will Didier Ya Konan shoveling in goals at will.

Hamburg SV – Hannover sees the guests continue their battle with Bayern Munchen over third place while Hamburg will be looking to salvage their mediocre season with a Europa League spot.

HSV has looked pretty uninspired lately, with a 6:2 victory over Koln the single three pointer they’ve managed to pick up in six games. Armin Veh was probably not the coach for the job, but one has to question Michael Oennings aptitude as well, even if you have to take into account the tough schedule they’ve had in these games: Mainz 05, Bayern Munchen, Koln, Hoffenheim and Dortmund – they were actually well on their way to beating the league leaders until a red card on Anis Ben-Hatira allowed Kuba BA‚aszczykowski to equalize in injury time.

Hannover is on quite the run on the other hand, proving many doubters wrong, myself included. Apart from the two on-fire strikers, other players have also become talking points. Rausch, Pogatetz, Schulz and Pinto are some of the examples of players who have truly pulled their weight this season.

Ben-Hatira is suspended, but Hamburg has one of the widest squads in the league and will have no problems replacing him, probably with Marcel Jansen.

The guests looks to have a complete squad. The line seems to be fairly well set for this one, but Didier Ya Konan as anytime goalscorer for 3.30 at Unibet is highly interesting considering how high his goalshare is and his blistering form recently.

Maybe this guy was pretty important after all Maybe this guy was pretty important after all.

Wolfsburg – St Pauli is probably the most relevant game of the round in regards to the relegation battle. Both teams have been extremely disappointing lately, with St Pauli not racking up a single point since their derby win in February while you have to go back eleven rounds to find Wolfsburgs second win.

Despite eventually losing the game, St Pauli put in a very impressive performance last round. With practically the whole starting line-up decimated by injuries and suspensions, they managed to hold off Bayer Leverkusen and even take the lead at one point before finally succumbing. Oczipka, Rothenbach, Volz and Zambrano are all still injured and Bartels will be suspended.

Wolfsburg has continued failing to deliver despite having what on paper looks like an incredibly talented squad. They’ll have have to do without Dieumerci Mbokani (inj) and Cicero (susp) for this game.

While St Pauli looked fairly solid defensively vs Leverkusen last round, it was mostly because they kept eleven men in their own box. With Wolfsburg clearly lacking in the offensive department as well, under 2.5 goals for 2.10 at Stan James or Unibet looks quite good.

Pedro Geromel, one of the best players in Koln this season Pedro Geromel, one of the best players in Koln this season

In Koln – Stuttgart, we find one team who was predicted as one of the favorites to get relegated but have placed themselves in a relatively comfortable eleventh place in the league table, hosting a traditional powerhouse team who are just two points above the relegation mark.

It is quite clear that motivation should be on Stuttgarts side, seeing that Koln are seven points clear of the relegation zone while Stuttgart still struggles. Pure motivation has failed Stuttgart before however as they’ve continued to drop points.

Pavel Pogrebnyak and Timo Gebhart are the important missing for Stuttgart while Köln will be without Adam Matuschyk.

Even though Rensing and Geromel have shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season, I wouldn’t exactly heap praise over Kolns defense. Both teams has in fact conceded 54 goals apiece, only surpassed by the laughable defensive performances of Gladbach and Werder Bremen.

Over 2.75 goals for 1.98 at Bet365 is a great price here. Other bets worth looking into might be Podolski to score for 3.05, Novakovic to score for 3.05 at Unibet or Zdravko Kuzmanovic to score at 7.0 at Bet365.

Torsten Frings, legitimate badass Torsten Frings, legitimate badass.

Werder Bremen – Schalke would probably be the second most anticipated match of the round in any other season. Now it’s a mid-table clash between two teams not going anywhere. Bremen has too much class to be in any real danger of relegation this year, while Schalke is in a steady ninth place – a Europa League spot is possible, but nothing more.

Schalke comes off a busy schedule with four games in under two weeks. One must admit that they’ve really shown what they’re capable of by beating the reigning Champions League champions 7-3 on aggregate, but one must also question the physical state of the players. In no other season have we found better examples of the averse effects of heavy matching, which is why you should think it over carefully before grabbing Schalke for the seemingly generous price of 3.66 available at Pinnacle.

The Over/Under looks decently priced as well. Maybe Torsten Frings to score for 5.25 at Unibet is just a tad too long?

Schweini will be missed, his mullet… not so much Schweini will be missed, his mullet… not so much.

The early Sunday game is the big gun: Bayern Munchen – Bayer Leverkusen.

Both teams are coming off performances of dubious quality, Bayern with the 1:1 draw that saw Louis Van Gaal get sacked and Leverkusen with a surprisingly narrow 2:1 victory over injury- and suspension-ridden St Pauli.

Newly appointed caretaker Andries Jonker will have to do without the services of Arjen Robben and Bastian Schweinsteiger. Schweinsteiger may have not shown his true class lately, but at his core, he’s one of the best midfielders in the world. Robben might be an even bigger loss. Bayern does have plenty of quality on the bench, but the two star players absences will surely be felt.

Some pundits have suggested Jupp Heynckes «conflict of interest» might play a part in the game – that the current head coach of Leverkusen might lose on purpose to give his future team a better chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season. As serious bettors, I don’t think we should give such nonsense much thought.

A better question would be in what way team morale is affected by Van Gaals departure – he seemed to garner zero respect from the players towards the end and it was clear the the player performances suffered because of it. The question you have to ask yourself is this: Would you prefer a mentally spent, zero confidence Bayern Munchen with Schweini and Robben, or a rejuvenated Bayern without them?

It’s a tough call. Bayern is currently available for 1.98 at 188bet and 5dimes for those of you willing to make it.

Sports Clubs and Sponsorships

The English Premier League Football season is in full swing and millions of fans around the world back their favorite teams to win the championship. We hear of sportspersons being signed on for advertising and commercial deals running into millions of dollars, apart from the payments they receive from their respective clubs, teams or groups for each playing season.

Sports clubs and teams themselves are sponsored by big corporates and conglomerates manufacturing and dealing in several businesses like electronics, automobiles, beverages, financial services, airlines, sports goods, clothing, packaging, retail, building construction, real estate and many others.

Some of the top Football Club sponsors, for categories such as clothing, sports equipment and kits are:

• Arsenal – Emirates

• Blackburn Rovers – Crown Paints

• Bolton Wanderers – Reebok

• Chelsea – Samsung

• Fulham – LG Electronics

• Liverpool – Carlsberg

• Manchester City – Thomas Cook

• Manchester United – American International Group

• Newcastle Ltd – Northern Rock

• Stoke City – Britannia

• Tottenham Hotspur – Mansion

• Wigan Athletic – JJB Sports Ltd

Logos – uses and benefits

It’s not uncommon to see sports teams around the world sporting company logos on their clothing, shoes, travel kits and other paraphernalia providing win-win situations for all in terms of business branding and revenue earnings.

However, the consumer electronics industry remains the hot favorite among corporate sponsors because of the endless stream of innovations in products and the ever growing demand for the latest gadgets and electronics in a widely aware consumer industry.

Companies like Sony Corp, Panasonic, Samsung, Philips and LG put their sponsorships to good use for various benefits. Panasonic uses its Ideas for Life positioning to reinforce brand image, engage retailers and consumers and increase sales. Sony used its seven-year FIFA deal for exclusive rights in the high definition TVs, personal computers, audio equipment and components and gaming equipment creating a very visible ‘digital life’ category.

In the US, Philips Electronics through its streamlined sponsorship programs focuses on soccer/football as a marketing platform. In a five-year deal, the company is able to achieve exclusivity in consumer electrical and electronic equipment and kitchen appliances. Likewise, Sony uses title sponsorship of NHRA’s Sport Compact Racing Series to promote brand awareness of its Xplod mobile audio while as co-sponsor to the Penske Racing NASCAR Nextel Cup; it promotes its HD TV products. Samsung Electronics, through its Hope for Education program donates consumer electronic products and software worth millions of dollars to schools; it also supports non-profit organizations that have links with music and sports celebrities to promote worthy causes.

Display and demos for new products is the current focus of many sponsorships; simultaneously building industry-trade relations through employee sales incentive contests, in-store promotions and client entertainment.

EPL 2011-12 Preview: Stoke City Vs QPR

Britannia Stadium is set to witness Premier League action, on Saturday, November 19, 2011, when Stoke City host QPR, in match week 12.

Stoke City are coming off a humiliating loss away at Bolton, in match week 11. The visitors were totally outclassed as Davies gave the hosts an early lead on 2 minutes. The sides went into the interval, with Bolton leading 2-0, on the back of a second goal, on 23 minutes, by Eagles. Bolton who lost to Stoke in last year’s FA Cup semi-finals, exacted revenge, as Eagles scored another goal in the second half, and Kalsnic helped himself to a brace, as well. The midweek Europa League fixture in Israel would have had a draining effect on the Potters who will seek to make amends against QPR.

QPR went down fighting, losing 3-2 to table leaders Manchester City in a home game, at Loftus Road, in match week 11. QPR became the first team to take a lead against City, this season, when Bothroyd put them ahead on 28 minutes. City leveled the score through Dzeko 13 minutes later and the sides went into the break, with the scores level on 1-1. Silva got City ahead 7 minutes into the second half, but QPR weren’t giving up yet, and on 69 minutes, Helguson made it 2-2 for the hosts. Y Toure’s header in the 74th minute proved decisive for City, and QPR were left ruing their missed opportunity to slavage a point when Helguson’s shot, eight minutes from the end, struck the bar.

Head to head, in the last 10 years, Stoke City and QPR have met in 10 league games, both teams winning four each, with the remaining two matches drawn. The last time these teams met was in March 2008, that match hosted by QPR was won 3-0 by the Loftus Road squad.

Stoke City have won 3, lost 5, and drawn the remaining 2 of their last 10 league matches, while QPR have won 3, drawn 3 and lost 4 of their last 10.

Currently in 12th place on the league table, the Potters have hosted 5 home games, this season, winning and drawing 2 each, while losing the remaining game; QPR, who are in 11th place have had 2 wins and 3 losses in their 5 away games.

Stoke City’s starting eleven against Bolton: Begovic, Wilkinson, Woodgate, Upson, Huth, Pennant, Delap, Whelan, Walters, Crouch, Jerome

QPR’s starting eleven against Manchester City: Kenny, Young, Gabbidon, Ferdinand, Traore, Mackie, Barton, Faurlin, Wright-Phillips, Bothroyd, Helguson

Chelsea Preview: Will The Blues Remain The Fashion This Season?

Chelsea pride themselves in being global entertainers more than anything else.

And more than anything else, the Premier League champions would like the tag of European champions, in keeping with their multi-national self-image. Especially the European Cup title that has eluded them.

In the last four years, Chelsea have entered one Champions League final and two semi-finals, and have returned empty handed.

This year could be the last opportunity for the core members of the team that made this possible.

Chelsea’s European ambitions have restricted the club, in that the UEFA insists on «financial fair play».

The club is not short of money, by any stretch of imagination, but this has meant that Chelsea boss Roman Abramovich has had to trim his budget.

This has meant the departure of a big-name signing such as Joe Cole. Another player, Tomas Kalas, who came in from Sigma Olomuc for a reported 5.2 mn, will be loaned out.

In the upcoming season, the team will also not have the services of Miroslav Stoch, who will be sold to Fenerbahce for an undisclosed amount. Michael Ballack will leave for Bayer Leverkusen, Joe Cole for Liverpool, and Danny Philiskik for Oxford United, all as free agents.

Players out on loan will include Rhys Taylor to Crewe, Ryan Bertrand to Nottingham Forest, and Ben Gordon to Kilmarnock.

Carlo Ancelotti has been the club’s most successful coach. Chelsea became only the seventh team in history to win the ‘double’, comprising the Premier League and FA Cup titles, under Ancelotti’s watch, last season.

They failed to achieve this under Jose Mourinho, arguably Chelsea’s most successful coach ever.

In fact, Chelsea were so dominant in 2009/10 that they became the first team to top 100 goals, in an English season after Tottenham Hotspurs achievement of 111 goals in 1962-63.

Ancelotti owes his legendary patience to his rural upbringing. The ex-Milan midfielder won the Champions League twice each as a player and as a coach for the Italian side.

A potential weakness for Chelsea in the upcoming season could be in defence. Jose Mourinho the coach of the 2005 Premier League winning side built the team on a defensive platform.

John Terry, Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira and Wayne Bridge were the defensive wall rival teams had to contend with before they could dream of beating Chelsea, five years ago.

Terry and Carvalho who remain are clearly aging, although Ashley Cole from Arsenal and Brazilian are great new options for Chelsea. Alex is not only solid in defence, but can also hunt with the hounds, and is a particular asset in free kick situations.

This is a team of big personalities, in John Terry, Frank Lampard, Petr Cech and Didier Drogba. On the flip side, this could mean a potential clash between, say, Didier Drogba and the team’s bad boy, Nicolas Anelka.

John Terry, in particular, is the club’s most successful captain ever. With Liverpool’s Yossi Benayoun replacing Joe Cole this season, they have one more potential captain.

England Frank Lampard was the driving force of the side in the last season, and his 30 club and international goals is an act that he could find hard to replicate, this time around.

Michael Essien, whom injury kept from doing World Cup duty for Ghana is the club’s most popular player, while the star of the future is 19 year old French teenager, Gael Kakuta.

Chelsea remain the team to beat this season.

Paul Runyan – Improve Your Chipping and Putting

Paul Runyan wrote a book called, The Short Way to Lower Scoring. He had a reputation for having an above average short game among his fellow touring professionals. I bought a copy of his book back in 1980 and even today, some thirty-two years later, I consider the purchase of his book, one of my finest purchases. Don’t let the simplicity of the illustrations and instruction fool you about the quality of the instruction delivered. I can tell you in no uncertain terms, his instruction is some of the most effective instruction, I have ever implemented and my short game improved tremendously as a result.

I don’t know if the book is in print today, I suspect it isn’t, I have seen used copies for sale on Amazon.com. If you do come across a copy of The Short Way to Lower Scoring, I highly recommend that you purchase a copy of it. This book ranks in the top-five of any golf books ever written.

Knowing how effective Paul’s techniques are, it amazes me that I don’t see touring professionals and the golfing public using his technique. Golfers are always looking for ways to improve their chipping and putting and yet, Paul’s technique remains in obscurity. A contradiction I find myself thinking about far too often for comfort. I can only conclude that golfers don’t know how simple and effective his technique is. I urge you to give his technique a try.

A little above his technique. The noticeable differences in his technique compared to the conventional way of putting and chipping is that both hands grip the club with their palms facing skyward. This is done because both arms are bent at forty-five degrees. The arms are bent so that you can stand close enough to the golf ball so your eyes are directly over the golf ball. Standing so close to the golf ball requires the heel of the club to be off the ground. With the heel off the ground, the toe of the club touches the ground.

It takes a while to get used to the Paul Runyan putting and chipping address position. However, none of the learning is particularly difficult. The book is easy to read and follow. The illustractions used clearly demonstrate the instructions.

When I first began using his chipping method, it took me about two weeks of practicing before I was able to get the ball to come off the club properly. You know when you have the proper technique because your chip shots will hold their line and roll true.

Premier League Match Time: Bolton Vs Tottenham

It’s Premier League match time as Tottenham Hotspur travel to the Reebok Stadium on Saturday to take on Bolton Wanderers in match week eleven of the Premier League.

Bolton have enjoyed the best start to their Premiership campaign since 2006, with just a solitary loss to Liverpool, along with two wins and two draws in their last five matches. The Trotters are currently in eleventh place on the points table, while Spurs are fifth.

Their match against Liverpool was hard-fought and Bolton created several scoring opportunities, with Zat Knight, Davies and Holden all having near misses. Bolton would also consider themselves unfortunate not to have had a penalty call answered by the referee when Lee Chung Yong was brought down by Carragher, in the Liverpool box.

Defender Cahill’s form on the day will be crucial to Bolton’s fortunes against Tottenham whose attack comprises the likes of Van der Vaart, Luca Modric and Gareth Bale. Ironically, Cahill’s best testimony comes from Spurs manager ‘Arry Redknapp who admits his own side’s defensive frailty and is reportedly planning to make a bid for Cahill in the January transfer market.

Redknapp is said to be willing to hand Bolton the £15 mn required to be paid in accordance  with a clause in Cahill’s contract.

Holden is another player Bolton will look to to provide the initiative in midfield against Redknapp’s charges. Holden has been in great form this season, and his showing in the Liverpool game was outstanding.

Spurs are coming off a great 3-0 win against champions Inter Milan in the Champions League thanks to a brilliant performance by Gareth Bale. Bale continued from where he left off in the first match against Milan last week, when Spurs lost 4-3. Gareth Bale’s hattrick came in the second half after Milan led 4-0, at the break. In the latest game, Bale had a hand in all three

goals though none came of his own boot.

Though Manchester United were deserving winners in match week ten, Spurs will bemoan the lost opportunities in the game by Modric, Van der Vaart and Pavlyuchenko. Bale himself had a typical run past the United defence and with Van der Sar at his mercy, shot wide of the post. But Jenas and Keane were strangely off colour, and Redknapp will want a better showing from the

pair on Saturday, against the Trotters.

Ahead of their game on Saturday, Bolton have some good news in the return to training by Martin Petrov. Petrov was nursing a hamstring injury that kept him out of the Liverpool game. Trotters’ manager Owen Coyle has an embarrassment of choices as Petrov will vie with Matt Taylor for a place in the starting eleven for the Spurs game.

For Bolton, Samuel, Gardner, J O’Brien and Davis will miss Saturday’s match owing to injury, while Tottenham’s injured last has Van der Vaart, Corluka, King, Defoe, Dawson, O’Hara and Woodgate.

Bolton had the following players in their starting eleven against Liverpool: Jainghtaskelainen, Steinsson, Knight, Cahill, Robinson, Lee, Holden, Muamba, Taylor, Elmander and Davies, while Klasnic, Moreno and Blake featured as substitutes.

Tottenham’s starting eleven against Manchester United comprised: Gomes, Hutton, Kaboul, Gallas, Assou-Ekotto, Lennon, Modric,Jenas, Bale, Van der Vaart and Keane. Palacios, Pavlyuchenko, Crouch took part in the action, as substitutes.

Anger Management By Being Slow To Take Offence

Religion has been a major target for comedians in the 2006 Edinburgh festival and in the world in general for some time. Should religious people be offended and even angered by jokes about their most sacred beliefs and those they worship? Maybe not as much as they often are.

The topic was discussed recently on BBC 1’s Heaven and Earth show. Canon Robin Gamble from Manchester Cathedral suggested that God is big enough to take care of himself. We should only be concerned when the weak and defenceless are lampooned.

Some religions, like Judaism, are already skilled at not taking themselves too seriously. There is a story, for example, about a 94 year old Jewish man on his death bed. Larry Jay Tish, a Jewish comedian, described what happened.

The dying Jew asked his rabbi to find a priest so that he could convert to Christianity.

«You have been a Jew your whole life for 94 years. You are on your death bed. And now you want to convert to Christianity. Why?» asked the rabbi.

«I figure it is better one of them should die rather than one of us!»

It is worth remembering that the priority of a comedian is to get a laugh. They are not too concerned about the possible sensitivities of the individuals in their audience.

Nor are they always trying to be malicious. They just need a laugh or they won’t survive as comedians. They may also need to shock in order to increase the size of their audiences.

It is worth taking time to understand exactly why comedians say or do those things which seem outrageous at first sight.

One comedian at the Festival dressed up as a Guantanamo Bay prisoner in an orange suit. He also wore a crown of thorns. Many Christians might well take offence at this but the comedian in question thinks laughter is sacred.

Laughter encourages you to mock authority and to think critically. He believes that such an attitude is typical of the spirit of Jesus.

Early in 2006, cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad were published in Denmark sparking world wide riots and angry protests. One protest placard read «Kill those who insult Islam.» But not all Muslims display such anger.

Omar Marzouk is a Danish, Muslim comedian. He can see humour in the situation but does not intend to offend his fellow muslims. However, he is not afraid to highlight stupidity wherever it occurs.

«It is really difficult being an European, Danish, Muslim because I have been confused about what to burn and who to boycott! It is hard being Muslim because of all the terrorism and now people hate me for being Danish too!»

Omar, born of Egyptian parents in Copenhagen, offends right wingers and radical muslims equally. Some of his comments, like the following where he refers to the London bombings might well offend even the moderates:

«I believe they should employ Muslims to ride on the trains and buses with suicide belts around their waist. Then we could also make our contribution to the war on terror. Then if a genuine suicide bomber should turn up you could say:

‘Listen fellow, get off. This is my bus!'»

He also has something to say about the shooting of the innocent Brazilian in London.

«There are certain rules to follow if you look like me and live in England. For example you can’t run in order to catch a train or bus. You walk.»

He may well offend many people and especially the relatives of the injured and dead but most of his audiences are just relieved to be able to laugh about such serious and frightening issues. Omar wants to ease the tension enough to allow people to talk about the problems.

Australian comedian, Jim Jeffries, argues that you don’t have to see his shows if you are worried about being offended. His posters say he will be offensive. If you are concerned, don’t buy a ticket. A typical jokey remark by him is the following:

«Are you worried about suicide bombers in Scotland? No. Of course not. Scotland looks like it has already been done!»

Some comedians pick religion as a target because they do not personally believe in God. For them cracking jokes about God is like making jokes about Santa Claus.

Ed Byrne believes that religion is an easy topic for comedians because everyone knows about it.

He tells his audiences that he became an atheist when he was quite young when he saw Christians installing a lightning conductor on his local church – «What a great deal of faith you’re showing!»

Ed does not believe that God, if He exists, could be so petty as to be offended by a comedian cracking a joke about Him. More important things are going on in the world.

Stephen Green from ‘Christian Voice’ argues that if God is not just a private lifestyle choice but the Almighty Ruler of the Universe, we should not take His name in vain and should be worried if we do. He feels that comedians do not have a clue about how deeply they offend religious people.

Ed, on the other hand, is offended by some Christians who believe that hurricane Katrina was sent to purify the city of New Orleans and who believe that God can destroy His own creation with «all the accuracy of a drunk seven year old stamping on ants.»

Canon Robin is most worried about how quick Christians are to take offence. He quoted from the Bible: «Love is slow to take offence.»

He is not worried by offensive remarks about religion: «God is a big boy He does not need me to stand up for Him. I am shocked by how quickly Christians are offended. We should be more tolerant. Life is brilliant. It is about joy and taking part in this joy.»

Stephen argues that you don’t insult someone just because they are big. You would not feel free to tell a big man that his mother was a whore. If God is that big, we should be worried about offending Him.

Canon Robin, as usual, disagreed with Stephen Green. We should feel safe and secure in God – not worried about God. If you can laugh at yourself and your beliefs, tensions will dissipate.

On the whole I agree with the views of Canon Robin. God is too big and life is too exciting to get angry about the attempts of comedians to use God or religion as the butt of their jokes. Love should be slow to take offence.

Taking offence has not done the world much good. Religious wars have caused the deaths of millions. It is time to try a different path.

St Paul is probably talking mainly about human relationships when he teaches that love is slow to take offence in his famous passage about love in his first letter to the Corinthian Christians.

A confident human being will not be worried about the people who make fun of him or her. He or she will have enough sense to realise that taking offence could lead to a damaging confrontation which will benefit no one.

As the Buddha said, the angry man is like some one holding a hot piece of coal in his hand to throw at his enemy. He will hurt himself as well as his enemy.

Confident humans will have enough self-confidence not to take insults personally. They will understand that not everyone will like them but plenty will and they do not need to become anxious and angry about the insults of those that dislike or envy them.

A loving human being will see the good even in the people who are insulting them. Those who are big enough to ignore the insults may well see their enemies becoming their friends.

Politicians have already learned the art of not responding to insults with anger. John Prescott, the UK deputy prime minister, is alleged to have called President Bush’s policy for peace in the middle east ‘cr**’. The White House replied very tolerantly:

«Being called names is part of the burden of leadership»

To sum up, religious people should not get too angry about offensive remarks about their religion. There is no need. They certainly should not become angry enough to kill.

Those they worship are big enough to defend themselves and usually teach love and forgiveness rather than violence. Enough deaths have already been caused through religious believers being quick to take offence at the fact that others do not share their respect for their beliefs about God.

All humans should be slow to take offence. Loving tolerance will produce far better and more long lasting results than anger.

If politicians, with the possible exception of John Prescott, can keep their cool, so can the rest of the human race!

Gervase Phinn, the Roman Catholic author, noticed that in Northern Ireland there is an emphatic Protestant piece of graffiti:

NO POPE HERE!

Underneath a Roman Catholic wit has written with equal emphasis:

LUCKY OLD POPE!

– a much better response than bombs and bigotry!

10 Advantages of Being Able to Drive

If you don’t have a driving licence, you could be missing out on a number of advantages. Here are 10 reasons why your New Year’s resolution should be learning to drive.

1. Driving could provide you with your first taste of independence, especially if you live at home with your parents.

2. If you have children, having a driving licence means being able to take them to school and pick them up, so you always know they’re safe.

3. Because you’ll have the convenience of a vehicle, you won’t have to use public transport to get your little ones to and from school.

4. You’ll also have the convenience to go to the shops, whenever you want to, not when a bus timetable permits or when you can get a lift.

5. If you’re a young adult, having a driving licence means having the freedom to pick up your friends and go to a wider array of venues to socialise.

6. If you’re in a long-distance relationship, you may want to use your driving licence to see your partner more often or with less hassle than you currently do.

7. If you currently have to carry shopping onto public transport, having a car could take a lot of stress out of the process.

8. One of the most popular methods of transport for people without a driving licence is by taxi, but this can be very expensive. Having a car could reduce this needless expense.

9. You may want a driving licence to take your family on holiday. The convenience of the car means you can go whenever you want.

10. Many people learn to drive because they have relatives they want to be able to visit more often and with greater convenience.

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to learn how to drive, you’re going to need to find a suitable teacher in your city or town. For instance, you may require Manchester driving schools to help you.

Why not use an online Manchester business directory to find schools in the city? As well as driving schools, it can also help you find everything from a Manchester dentist to a Manchester solicitor.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Living in a City Center

Some people say that city center is the best place to live. One has an easy access to all the amenities of life. Additionally, city centers are the places where all the business, educational, official and trade activity centers are located. The commuting time is nothing as compared to those living in the suburbs. There are, however, some big disadvantages of living in the city center as well. Following lines would give you a great comparison in this regard.

Advantages

The biggest advantage of living in a city-center is the easy access to all the business, trade and educational offices. City-centers are planned in such a manner that they become the hub of everything related to commercial, official or educational fields. Most universities and colleges are located in the city-center and students from suburbs have to commute long distances to reach their alma maters. Similarly, professionals have to take public or private transport to reach the city-center. Monthly fares of public transports, despite all the discounts, are quite expensive these days.

On the contrary, people living in the city-center do not have to incur any transportation costs. In most cases, all the famous buildings, business centers and universities are located within a walking distance. There are no expenditures in transportation costs and time wasted in travelling. Additionally, one can save money on dining costs as one can simply head back to home to eat during lunch breaks. People from the suburbs are unfortunate in this regard. They have to eat lunch from the push carts or restaurants and this entails some big spending, even if the rates are affordable. Monthly expenditures on food bills are enough to cause a big dent in your monthly budget.

Disadvantages

There are also many disadvantages of living in a city-center. First of all, there is no sense of privacy as the city centre remains active till late night. Secondly, the house rents are sky high in the city-center. Everyone wants to live there and homeowners take full advantage of this phenomenon. Another disadvantage of living in a city-center is the lack of suburban activities and neighbourhood attitude that is prevalent in the suburbs. There are hardly any parks and open spaces where one can breathe fresh air. In most cases, the environment is polluted because of thousands of cars that throng the roads and alleys. Similarly, the proportion of trees and shrubs is far less than a typical suburb that is usually green and pollution free.

The sense of community is also lacking in the city-center as people remain busy in their own affairs and do not pay any attention to their neighbours and friends. Another down point of living in the city center is the higher prices of commodities. As compared to suburbs, that are usually located close to farmer markets; city centers are cramped places with high property rents. Shops often pass on that high price to their customers.

The Highlights of Adam Sandler’s Career

Adam Sandler, known as Sandman to his friends, didn’t always dream of working as an actor or a comedian. His father Stanley worked as an electrical engineer, and his mother Judy taught nursery school. Born on Sept. 9, 1966, in a Brooklyn hospital, the future actor only spent a few years in Brooklyn before his family decided to move. Manchester, NH, was a far cry from his former home, and the actor admits that he had trouble fitting in with his classmates.

While attending Manchester Central High School, he became the class clown. Sandler discovered that it was more fun making his classmates laugh with him instead of at him. After graduating high school, he attended New York University and started perfecting his craft at clubs around the city. In 1988, he finished classes at the Tisch School of the Arts and launched his career.

Unlike many other actors, who struggle in their early days, it didn’t take long for Sandler to find success. While still in college, he landed a major role on «The Cosby Show,» playing the best friend of one of the characters. After graduating college, he landed a role on «Remote Control.» The show, which aired on MTV, gave him the chance to perfect some of his humorous characters. Despite landing several roles, his big break came a few years later. Dennis Miller saw Sandler perform and recommended that Lorne Michaels watch his act.

Michaels was so impressed by his talent that he gave him a job writing for «Saturday Night Live.» Writers on the show have the chance to write themselves into sketches as well as write sketches for other actors. Sandler slowly began pitching a few ideas that made it onto the show, and he eventually started writing sketches that showcased his own talents. He wrote several memorable characters and created songs that charted in the United States, including «The Chanukah Song.»

While still on the show, he starred in a handful of films, including «Airheads» and «Mixed Nuts,» but it was «Billy Madison» that launched his film career. Starring as a man sent back to elementary school, he won over a legion of fans with his patented brand of raunchy humor. The same year that «Billy Madison» landed in theaters, Michaels fired Sandler and several other actors from «Saturday Night Live.»

Sandler didn’t let that slow him down. «Billy Madison» became a cult classic and more than earned back its budget at the box office, and studios took notice of the actor. He starred in seven more films leading up to 2000, and many of those films were box-office hits, including «The Wedding Singer» and «Happy Gilmore.» Sandler signed on for the dark comedy «Very Bad Things,» starring Christian Slater, but he later dropped out to work on «The Waterboy.» His next big film was «Big Daddy,» which featured Sandler playing a man forced to grow up. While working on the film, he met a young actress named Jackie Titone. The actress appeared in several of his films, and the two are now married with two children.

Despite a string of hit comedic films, Sandler wanted to venture into darker territory. His first chance came with the 2002 film «Punch-Drunk Love.» He received a Golden Globe nomination for his role, and many critics wondered if he would focus more on dramas. He auditioned for roles in «Collateral» and «Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,» but he lost those roles to Jamie Foxx and Johnny Depp. Though he appeared in «Reign Over Me» and a few other dramas, he decided to go back to his roots.

Sandler is close friends with actor Kevin James («Grown Ups»), and the two worked together in 2007 on «I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.» The film starred the two men as firefighters who agree to marry for the benefits they get from their insurance company. The two also appeared together in «Grown Ups» and its sequel «Grown Ups 2,» and Sandler also appeared on James’ television show «The King of Queens.»

Sandler returned to comedy for «You Don’t Mess with the Zohan» before starring in the dramedy «Funny People.» The actor played an older comedian who begins working with a younger comic, played by Seth Rogen («Knocked Up»), after learning he’s dying. The role led to an invitation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

While still starring in hit films, Sandler decided to try working behind the camera. He launched Happy Madison Productions, which produced the films «The House Bunny» and «Here Comes the Boom,» among others. He also started the Scary Madison label to produce horror films such as «The Shortcut.» Sandler is starring in films that are in production for release in 2013 and 2014, showing that he loves working in front of the camera as much as he enjoys producing films and that fans can look forward to seeing more from him.
